Treatment of Thread Veins
Vascular lesions
A large number of men and women all over the world suffer from disorders of the blood vessels (vascular lesions). These can be of various types, from small telangiectasias (sometimes called spider veins or broken veins) to large Port Wine Stains.
Some lesions are present from birth, while others develop with age, or as the result of environmental damage (such as sun exposure). Regardless of the size of the lesion, they can cause psychological trauma so strong that patients seek professional help to remove them. Historically they have been covered with make up, while surgery has been limited to the larger vessels on the legs. Sclerotherapy has also been used successfully to treat vascular lesions on the legs.
Ellipse Super Light offers a clinically proven and effective treatment to remove many vascular lesions, either on its own or as a follow up treatment to sclerotherapy.
How does Ellipse Super Light treatment work ?
Ellipse Super Light treatment works by directing well controlled pulses of light into the upper skin. The light is absorbed by one of the body's own natural chemicals - haemoglobin - contained in the red blood cells.
Haemoglobin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the wall of the blood vessels, which are permanently damaged and removed by the body's own defence mechanism. The method of converting light to heat and using it to destroy the target without damaging the surrounding tissues is called Selective Photothermolysis.
The visible light produced by Ellipse Super Light is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the vessel. Best results are obtained on clients who have light to medium skin.

Question and Answers
How does the Ellipse Super Light treatment work?
The visible light from the Ellipse Super Light applicator is guided via a glass prism to the affected area. Blood contains haemoglobin that absorbs the light and converts it into heat. This heat destroys the protein in the wall of the thread vein. As a result it will gradually and safely disappear after treatment.
To ensure optimal light transmission to the thread veins, a thin layer of gel (similar to that used in ultrasound examinations) is applied to the skin. The hand held applicator is moved over the entire treatment area between each flash of light.
Which thread veins can be treated?
Thread veins on all body sites can be treated. However, due to the high pressure in the legs, lower extremities are more difficult to treat. Results in the face are, however, very good.
How long does an Ellipse Super Light treatment session take?
The treatment time depends on the area to be covered or the number of distinct vessels to be treated in a treatment session. Typically 10 - 20 minutes.
Does Ellipse Super Light treatment hurt?
No anaesthetics are required and most people describe the sensation as similar to that of a rubber band snapping onto the skin followed by a warm sensation lasting several minutes. It may be beneficial to cool the skin after the treatment.
Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?
You should avoid tanning (sun, solarium and self-tanning creams) before treatment, as this increases the amount of pigment in the skin and makes the skin itself absorb more light. Generally no post treatment care is needed, but people with sensitive skin may benefit from using a soothing cream for a few days. We recommend you limit exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen (SPF 60) for a few weeks following a treatment. After treatment of leg veins, compression (surgical) stockings should be worn for two weeks.
How many Ellipse Super Light treatments do I need?
The number of treatments depends on the body site and the severity of the thread vein. Usually 1 - 4 treatments are needed and these scheduled about one month apart.
How can I be sure Ellipse Super Light is safe and effective?
Clinical trials documenting Ellipse Super Light's safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors prior to the release of the product. The results of these tests are then published in respected, refereed medical journals. You are welcome to view these scientific papers by clicking on the link Article list. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.
