Skin Rejuvenation & Sun-Damaged Skin

Sun-damaged skin

While the trauma of ageing skin is nowhere near as great as for vascular or pigmented lesions, the simple fact remains that most people do not like the thought of ageing. Exposure to the sun accelerates the ageing process of the skin, and can cause disruption in the normal blood supply to the skin (which results in vascular disorders such as telangiectasias or diffuse redness) It can also cause irregular pigmentation that shows as freckles (ephelides) or age-spots (solar lentigines), and irregular pore size.

The alternative methods of treating sun damaged skin are:

Make-up: This is simple, painless and relatively inexpensive, but it is only a cover-up and requires an everlasting commitment to maintain the appearance desired by the patient.

Surgery: No effective traditional surgical method for treating all the effects of sun-damaged skin exists. Laser surgery (cosmetic resurfacing of the skin) is available but is expensive and recovery time is comparatively long.

Ellipse Super Light Treatment offers clinically proven treatment for sun-damaged skin, covering both vascular and pigmented aspects.

How does Ellipse Super Light treatment work ?

Ellipse Super Light treatment works by directing well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by two of the body's own natural chemicals - melanin in the pigmented areas and haemoglobin in the red blood.

Both these pigments convert the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the parts of the cells in which the melanin is stored, and to damage the walls of the vessels supplying blood to the areas where vascular damage is seen. This technique has the name "Selective Photothermolysis"

The visible light produced by the Ellipse Light systems are carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the targets without damaging surrounding tissues.

The Ellipse Super Light Skin Rejuvenation treatment will treat diffuse redness and pigmented disorders caused by sun-damage and also improve the skin texture.

The Ellipse Super Light Photo Rejuvenation treatment will additionally treat larger (individually visible vessels) telangiectasias.

Both Photo Rejuvenation and Skin Rejuvenation are quick and simple treatments that do not interfere with your normal daily routine. Both are aimed at repairing sun-damage found on the face, neck chest and hands.

This is the excellent result after only two Ellipse Super Light treatments of sun-damaged skin.

Question and Answers

How does the Ellipse Super Light treatment work?

The Ellipse Super Light flash-lamp produces light, which is carefully filtered before it reaches the skin; this ensures that only light of the correct "types" (technically described as "wavelengths") are allowed to reach the skin - the non-useful wavelengths are removed by the filters. The light that is allowed through has been chosen because it is the sort that two natural body substances respond to. The age spots contain a substance called melanin and the blood vessels contain another called haemoglobin. When cells containing a lot of melanin or haemoglobin are hit with the right type of light, they heat up and are destroyed, within a thousandth of one second.

Can I be treated?

As treatment is based on light absorption in melanin and in haemoglobin, treatments are most efficient in persons with light skin, who are not sun-tanned at the time of the treatment. The unique software of the Ellipse Super Light System is pre-programmed for different skin colours and adjusts the energy output to match the requirements of your skin.

How long does an Ellipse Super Light treatment session take?

The glass prism of the Ellipse Super Light applicator, which guides the light to the skin, is 1 cm by 5 cm so that a large area can be targeted in one flash. A full-face treatment takes less than 20 minutes.

Does it hurt?

Tolerance of pain is very individual from person to person. No anaesthetics are required and many people describe the discomfort as a warming sensation similar to the feeling one has during an evening after a day on the beach. The lighter the skin colour, the less pain.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

As the light is absorbed by melanin, it is extremely important to avoid sun tanning before the whole Ellipse Super Light treatment procedure. Otherwise the light will be absorbed by melanin in the skin surface, making the treatment more uncomfortable and less effective. Generally no post-treatment care is necessary, but people with sensitive skin may benefit from applying an ice pack to the face immediately after treatment or applying some ointment prescribed by the doctor. Furthermore, it is recommended to use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 60) for a few weeks following the treatment.

What can I expect?

You may notice that the skin looks little "dirty" for a few days following treatment. After that you will find that the skin becomes smoother and fresher. You should expect up to 4 treatments for optimal results.

How can I be sure Ellipse Super Light is safe and effective?

Clinical trials documenting Ellipse Super Light's safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors prior to the release of the product. The results of these tests are then published in respected, refereed medical journals. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.
